The Boston Celtics plan on keeping Jaylen Brown and not trading him after picking him at No. 3 in the 2016 NBA Draft

Before the Boston Celtics made their selection with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, there were rumors buzzing about the Celts potentially making a blockbuster trade for the pick and whatever player was selected there. So when Boston took Jaylen Brown with the third pick, the buzz kept going that he wouldn’t be with the Cletics long.

Apparently that’s far from the truth.

According to a report from Andy Katz of ESPN, the Celtics are planning on keeping Jaylen Brown and currently have no intention of trading him:

This is certainly a curious situation if that’s really the case regarding the Celtics and Brown. Brown was once though of as a top-5 prospect, but had seemingly slipped closer to the picks No. 7-9 range as the draft grew nearer.

Subsequently, for the Celtics to take Jaylen Brown with the No. 3 pick doesn’t seem like it’s close to maximizing the value of the pick. They selected a player that they could’ve gotten a handful of picks later in the draft and now aren’t trading him to still try and maximize the value of the pick.

That being said, Brown could be an interesting cog in the system for Boston. He’s a player that can literally do most everything well and a player that could thrive under the tutelage of someone like Brad Stevens.

He’ll have that chance, too—because he’s staying a Celtic.
