Sacramento Kings: Oscar Robertson, No. 1, 1960 NBA Draft

Oscar Robertson was drafted by the then Cincinnati Royals with the first overall pick in the 1960 NBA Draft, after a tremendous career at the University of Cincinnati. The Big O won Rookie of the Year and was the MVP of the All-Star game in the same season. The next year, in one of the greatest statistical achievements in league history, Robertson averaged a triple-double for a full season, with 30 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists per game to help the Royals make the playoffs. Jerry Lucas joined the team in 1963, and the Royals were one of the top teams in the league, making the playoffs the next four years.

Robertson’s time with the Royals didn’t end well, with the team struggling over his final three years on the team, and he was traded to Milwaukee in 1970. With the Bucks he would team up with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to win his first and only NBA Championship. One of the most versatile players to ever play the game, Robertson is remembered for his absurd stat lines and for his intense spirit. Robertson’s breakup with the Royals was bad, but regardless, the Indiana native is the best player drafted in franchise history.
