In Bowling Green, Kentucky, there is a young head coach who knows a thing or two about slinging the pigskin. Former NFL quarterback (1994-2000) and Bobby Petrino disciple Jeff Brohm just might be the next mid-major head coach to get his first big time Power 5 job.

Brohm had been a quarterbacks coach for his alma mater at the University of Louisville under Petrino for four years (2003-06) before Petrino briefly spent part of a season as the head coach of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons in 2007. Both coaches would reconnect, again briefly, in 2013 when Petrino look over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers program.

Western Kentucky has become an exciting Division I program in Conference USA, as the Hilltoppers love to crush opponents through the air with their pass-heavy offense. Losing former offensive coordinator Tyson Helton to the USC Trojans doesn’t help, but expect Western Kentucky to not skip a beat on offense with Brohm as head coach.

Brohm is in his late 40s, which is an ideal time for a head coach to take the leap from mid-major to Power 5. His reputation as a coach for gunslingers at quarterback will work marvelously in Texas where quarterbacks grow on trees

Since Baylor ran a high-octane spread offense under Briles, having Brohm leave Bowling Green for Waco after the 2016 NCAA season might be the offensive mind that Baylor would need to recover from their embarrassing sexual assault scandal. Baylor loves to play fast and throw the ball. So does Brohm.
