Golden State Warriors

Pick: No. 30 Damian Jones, No. 38 Patrick McCaw

The 2016 NBA Draft honestly felt rough for the Golden State Warriors in the sense that you wanted to just take the collective team into your arms and let them know that it was all going to be okay. After all, they did just become the first team to blow a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals earlier this week and now they’re having to already move forward. That’s a rough look and you might even have to say it feels a bit too soon.

With that being said, I really like what the Warriors were able to do with their lone pick in the first round, especially considering that they had the last pick of the round. Again, the Warriors were a team that benefitted from how insane the first round of this draft was, but it allowed them to take one of the most talented big men with a ton of upside in this draft in Damian Jones out of Vanderbilt.

Considering that Festus Ezeli might be gone in free agency this summer, the Warriors taking Jones offers them a contingency plan behind Andrew Bogut if Ezeli does depart. Moreover, Jones has the potential to develop into a legit starter if all goes right. While I’m not huge on trading up and paying to take Patrick McCaw at No. 38, I understand why they did as McCaw has a ton of upside as well. All things considered, it was a good look for the Warriors as they recover from the Finals.

Final Grade: B+
