Detroit Pistons – Stan Van Gundy and Andre Drummond

Stan Van Gundy might be a genius.

The head coach of the Detroit Pistons engineered a run to the NBA Finals when he was running the show for the Orlando Magic, and he did it with a unique blend of assets. Orlando used the dominant defensive presence of Dwight Howard to deter opponents, while flooding the three-point line with long, rangy three-point shooters in the form of Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu.

Does that sound like anyone in particular?

Van Gundy now has the benefit of Andre Drummond patrolling the middle in Detroit, and while he is not the defensive force that Howard was at the same age, the tools are there. Drummond is still wildly young and he is a fantastic rebounder, leaving many to believe that “the leap” is coming with another year under his head coach.

Adding Kevin Durant to the mix would be a huge coup for Detroit, and the Pistons already have other assets (Stanley Johnson, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Reggie Jackson) that would be appetizing. Again, there are other places that would probably be better for Durant, but a starting five that includes Drummond, Durant, Johnson, Caldwell-Pope and Jackson would challenge the Cavaliers for Eastern Conference supremacy right away.
