Power ranking the Kevin Durant NBA 2016 free agency suitors
By John Buhler
While it is entirely up to him with what he wants to do in 2016 NBA free agency, the most logical thing for Durant to do is sign a two-year deal with his current team in the Thunder with a player option in 2017-18, so he can opt out when the cap explodes and make even more money as he’ll qualify for the super max as a 10-year veteran of the same team.
As currently constructed with Victor Oladipo coming over from the Orlando Magic in the Serge Ibaka trade, there is a distinct possibility that the 2016-17 Thunder are good enough to win Oklahoma City its first NBA championship.
Durant has an great owner in Clay Bennett, an elite general manager in Sam Presti, a great fan base in Loud City, and most importantly a top seven player in the league in teammate point guard Russell Westbrook.
To say Durant is beloved in Oklahoma City would be an understatement and why wouldn’t he give it one more year before re-entering free agency again summer 2017, only this time with Westbrook when the NBA Salary Cap is set to skyrocket. In Oklahoma City, Durant can have his cake and eat it, too. Free agency is exciting, but he really needs to stay with the Thunder for one more year at the minimum for his legacy and his best shot at winning a title this upcoming season.
