9. Kole Calhoun, OF, Los Angeles Angels

Calhoun may not be a prototypical star, but he’s a solid regular that can contribute on a winning ballclub for a few years to come.

Despite having the best position player in baseball, the Angels have fallen out of AL West contention and will be hamstrung by a few terrible contracts and bottom-ranked farm system for the foreseeable future. Injuries hurt whatever chance Los Angeles had to succeed this season, and it will now need to deal what it can at the deadline.

While there isn’t much left outside of a couple of relievers, Calhoun will at least help the Angels get some young talent at the deadline. The 28-year-old is under contract through 2019 via arbitration and would be an upgrade in right field for a number of buying teams.

Calhoun came out of nowhere to have a solid debut season in 2013, and has combined for 7.5 WAR over the past two years as an everyday player according to FanGraphs.  A wRC+ mark of 129 so far this year is on pace to match Calhoun’s career best, and his defensive numbers have been solid over the past two seasons.

Those numbers aren’t flashy, particularly when compared to fellow outfielder Mike Trout, but they are good enough to warrant a fairly sizable return. Again, the Giants are making it known they need an outfielder, while the Cleveland Indians are also expected to enter the fray.
