2016 NBA free agency: 5 worst fits for DeMar DeRozan
By John Buhler
The Memphis Grizzlies could have a different look next season if three of their key free agents end up leaving: point guard Mike Conley, small forward Matt Barnes, and shooting guard Courtney Lee.
Especially if Conley leaves, the Grizzlies will try to bring in an All-Star-caliber player to keep the Grit N’ Grind era alive for at least a few more years with Tony Allen out on the wing and both Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol in the frontcourt.
New head coach David Fizdale will want to establish a defensive identity in Memphis, but also introduce some 3-point shooting to an archaic offense centered around sluggish low-post play. Though DeRozan is a marquee talent, he won’t fit into what Fizdale will want to do with his 2016-17 Grizzlies team.
DeRozan is a fantastic player, but not the 3-and-D guy Fizdale will want on the outside with Allen. In theory, DeRozan could play in a drive-and-kick game like Conley did for years as the Grizzlies point guard, but DeRozan isn’t the dynamic passer that Conley has been for Memphis.
Though a more gifted offensive player than Allen, they both play shooting guard. Signing DeRozan would essentially force an elite defender in Allen to the three, which would render the Grizzlies’ three-point game almost non-existent.
