2016 NBA free agency: 5 worst fits for DeMar DeRozan
By John Buhler
IT would be a serious panic move for the Oklahoma City Thunder to sign DeRozan should soon-to-be free agent superstar Kevin Durant leave the organization this summer.
Oklahoma City already has Russell Westbrook and Victor Oladipo in the backcourt. Though losing Dion Waiters might sting a bit in free agency, a backcourt trio of Westbrook, Oladipo, and DeRozan is going to take a ton of shots and miss a bunch from the outside. All three are volume shooters without a great game from beyond the arc.
Would the Thunder be a playoff team with DeRozan in place of Durant? Absolutely, but there are no guarantees they would get out of the first round.
For Oklahoma City to win an NBA Championship in 2017, besides re-signing Durant, the Thunder will need to upgrade its perimeter defense and its outside shooting. Oladipo is a great step in the right direction for the Thunder, on the defensive end at the very least.
Oladipo can still become a strong outside shooter as he is still a young player. DeRozan might be too old to take on a different offensive role than the one he has carved out with the Raptors. There also might be friction in the backcourt with Westbrook, who loves to take charge of the offense for large stretches of the game.
Next: 2. Los Angeles Lakers.
