2016 NBA free agency: 5 worst fits for DeMar DeRozan
By John Buhler
One of the biggest surprises of this offseason has been the New York Knicks’ decision to scrap the rebuilding process and try to make the Eastern Conference Playoffs with an All-Star cast. Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis received a welcome addition to the club in the form of former Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose.
Even with three good players in Anthony, Porzingis and Rose, it seems that team president Phil Jackson wants to get at least one other All-Star-caliber player to join the 2016-17 Knicks. Along with Al Horford, Dwight Howard, Joakim Noah and even Durant, DeRozan is a piece the Knicks might consider, especially if starting two-guard Arron Afflalo walks.
On paper, Anthony, DeRozan, Porzingis and Rose looks like the makings of a strong team, but joining those three would be a huge mistake for DeRozan. Anthony and Rose are ball-dominant players.
Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek has said that he wants to center the offense around Porzingis. While Anthony might finally be willing to play second fiddle on a team, Rose probably is not, and besides, why would DeRozan want to even consider being a fourth wheel? Not to mention signing with a division rival of the Raptors isn’t great for his brand either.
