Michael Phelps qualified for his fifth Olympic games as the most successful American swimmer of all-time will compete in the Rio Olympics.
Michael Phelps is already the most successful Olympian of all time. He’s won 22 medals and been to four Olympic games. During Wednesday’s Olympic trials, Phelps qualified for his fifth Olympic games.
Phelps finished first in his Rio Olympics trials, securing his spot at the games. He seems to have recently decided that the threat of the Zika virus and everything else happening in Rio was outweighed by the prospect of winning gold again.
Phelps has had a troubled past, to say the least. The 31-year old has already retired and came back once, and has entered rehab after an arrest for drunken driving. Phelps was photographed allegedly smoking marijuana in 2009. He has since overcome his past and returned to competitive swimming, continuing his dominance of the international swimming scene.

Phelps will not compete in the 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter freestyle events due to scratches in the qualifying races, but it’s likely that we’ll see him in the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley. Phelps has already qualified for the 200-meter butterfly with a first-place time of 1:54.84. Phelps is the first American male swimmer to qualify for five Olympic games.
