NBA Free Agency 2016: 5 targets for Spurs
By Brad Weiss
Kevin Durant is the number one priority on every NBA team’s wish list, especially after Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James said he will be returning to Cleveland. However, Durant is only scheduled to meet with six teams, and one of those teams is the San Antonio Spurs.
Durant has a nice thing going in Oklahoma City, and he nearly led his team to the NBA Finals last season. However, the Golden State Warriors came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat his Thunder in seven games, earning their second consecutive trip to the NBA Finals. Guard Russell Westbrook will return to OKC next season, and Durant may want to take care of his unfinished business before leaving the Thunder.
While many believe he will re-sign with the Thunder, Durant is going to listen to offers, so the Spurs need to make their best pitch to him. They may not get to sign him this year, but with Westbrook possibly leaving OKC after next season, Durant could be feeling out people for the 2017-18 off-season.
Durant is an absolute superstar, and if the Spurs were able to sway him to San Antonio, they would instantly be the favorites to win it all next season.
The Spurs’ biggest advantage is their coach, who Durant says is the reason the Spurs are always in contention.
“Gregg Popovich, man,” Durant told CBSSports.com. “No matter how many moving parts they have on their team, he stays consistent with what he does.”
Hopefully for the Spurs, KD could be one of those moving parts very soon.
