3. Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks inclusion on this list might be a bigger surprise than that of the Bucks, since they are currently one of two teams to have already scheduled a meeting with Howard. This suggests the Hawks don’t believe they are going to get Al Horford back, and that Howard is their ideal replacement. However, I’m not convinced this is a good fit.

In a vacuum, the idea of Howard going to Atlanta and buying into Mike Budenholzer’s system seems promising. Howard’s the type of rangey, athletic big man that could really cause damage by moving the ball, rebounding and defending the rim, and he could wreak havoc in the pick-and-roll with Dennis Schroder. The problem is he doesn’t want to do half of these things, and if his career has taught us anything, it’s that Howard will do whatever he wants.

Howard would definitely make an impact if he were to sign with the Hawks, and he would help replace Horford in terms of name recognition, but he would have an adverse effect in terms of success, which isn’t what anyone wants.
