MLB Trade Deadline: 15 deals that should happen
13. CC Sabathia to the Texas Rangers
Another area the Rangers will look to address is the rotation, as multiple Texas starters are currently on the disabled list. It’s unclear what the team will get from Yu Darvish over the rest of the season, so a mid-rotation starter to slide in behind Cole Hamels is a necessity for the stretch run and postseason.
With so few options available, the Rangers may have to hope some unexpected starters get dealt. Many expect the Yankees to deal mostly from the bullpen should they sell, but New York’s rotation could also attract some interest in a weak market.
Of any New York starter, the resurgent Sabathia is the most likely to be dealt. After three consecutive tough seasons, Sabathia has surprisingly bounced back at 35 years old, posting a 3.17 ERA (3.65 FIP) according to FanGraphs.
Injuries have been a problem for Sabathia recently, and there was some concern when he suffered a groin injury in early May. However, Sabathia has allowed more than two earned runs in just two of eight starts since being activated from the disabled list, and his trade value is likely at its peak.
New York will likely need to cover some of the $25 million vesting option Sabathia receives in 2017 if he doesn’t end the year on the disable list. Beyond that, the veteran is a solid rotation option for Texas.
