Atlanta Hawks: Upgrade on the wing

The Atlanta Hawks are just one season removed from a 60-win campaign. That seems somewhat hard to believe based on the nature of this particular franchise, as the Hawks have not reached the NBA Finals since relocating from St. Louis several decades ago, but it does illustrate how close Atlanta could be.

The team did take a small step back in moving on from Jeff Teague, but the frontcourt duo of Al Horford and Paul Millsap might be the best in the NBA and that would threaten the Warriors. Make no mistake, Atlanta is not in Golden State’s class right now, but if Mike Budenholzer and this front office could add a major wing upgrade, things could get interesting.

The most obvious wing upgrade this summer would be Kevin Durant, but that is likely a pipe dream. With that said, what about an addition of Nic Batum? If the Hawks could pull off that move, add a backup point guard and perhaps an insurance big man, this could be a 55-win team that matches up quite well up front with a team like the Warriors.

As with most of the NBA’s teams, you have to squint to see the path for Atlanta, but they could be one piece away… if that piece is Durant.
