J.K. Simmons wants to explore Commissioner Gordon’s badass side in Justice League film and beyond.

By now you’ve probably seen the photos of J.K. Simmons getting positively ripped in the gym. All of that training is in preparation for his role as Commissioner Jim Gordon in the upcoming Justice League film, and hopefully elsewhere in the DC Universe.

Simmons has a different view of Jim Gordon, largely due to when he grew up. “People of my generation remember Commissioner Gordon as this jolly, ineffectual Santa Claus type, and I think over the years there’s definitely much more of a badass side to him.”  This helps to explain all of the time Simmons is spending in the gym. He continues to say that he doesn’t want Gordon to be a damsel in distress: “…I like the idea of Commissioner Gordon as a guy that can take care of himself, a guy that’s a real partner to Batman, not just a guy that turns on the bat signal and goes, ‘Help! Help, Batman!’”

Traveling back through Batman’s history on television and film, it’s clear that the role of Jim Gordon has changed with the times. There’s the 1960s Commissioner Gordon, played by Neil Hamilton, and then the most recent iteration, played by fellow Oscar winner Gary Oldman. Oldman’s Gordon was much more likely to jump in and help Batman, whereas Hamilton’s job was to pick up the iconic Bat Phone to call for help. Simmons wants to bring the badass to Jim Gordon, and given the world that director Zack Snyder has created in Batman vs Superman, it looks like a grittier Jim Gordon will fit in just fine.
