NBA Free Agency 2016: Power Ranking Day 1 signings
By Mark Gunnels
First off, let me start off by saying I absolutely love Mike Conley’s game. He’s one of the few pure point guards the association has to offer nowadays.
However, I do not love him enough to give him the richest contract in NBA history (although LeBron and Durant will surpass him soon).
Conley agreed to a five-year deal worth $153 million today.
Yes, you read that right.
By the time the season tips-off, Conley will be 29-year-old.
To make matter worse, Conley has never made an all-star game, which makes this contract even more head scratching. I know the salary cap has skyrocketed but this is borderline insane.
Also, Conley is fresh off an Achilles injury, so we don’t even know if he’ll return to his typical production.
On the flip side, if Conley stays healthy, he should continue as a steady rock at point guard and with Parsons onboard, maybe they”ll be able to take Memphis to new heights.
Having said that, $153 million for Conley doesn’t even feel right as I type this sentence.
