High Value SP

Jake Odorizzi-Tampa Bay Rays (8,300): The Rays got a win yesterday over the visiting Angels and look to take another game tonight at the Trop behind Jake Odorizzi. In his last start, Odorizzi only lasted five innings but did strike out seven while allowing two runs on three hits.  Odorizzi’s ERA is almost two runs lower at home than on the road this season and he has held opponents to a .211 average at the Trop while averaging over a strikeout an inning (55 in 52.1 innings).

Odorizzi did face the Angels in LA and allowed two runs on five hits over six innings in a no-decision earlier this year, but I think he can improve on that at home where his splits are better.  Adie from their 21-run outburst against the Red Sox on Saturday, the Angels lineup hasn’t been doing much lately, so I like Odorizzi’s chances at putting together a nice game tonight in Tampa. ∗∗∗

Dallas Keuchel-Houston Astros (8,300): It’s been a rough season for the Astros’ breakout starter from last year.  Keuchel enters tonight’s start with a 5.13 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.  He hasn’t been dominant in any of his recent outings although there are some signs that things may be starting for the Houston lefty.

Keuchel did win each of his last two starts picking up consecutive wins for the firs time this season and he has gotten a “quality start” in each of his last three outings.  He has a ways to go before he’s back to his “ace”-like self, but he’s been better at home than on the road, and tonight he’ll take the mound against the Mariners who he knows well and should be able to continue his turnaround against this evening.

Carlos Rodon-Chicago White Sox (7,900): If you’re spending under 8K tonight, the starter I like the most is Carlos Rodon of the White Sox as he takes on the Yankees.  Rodon is just 2-6 on the year with a 4.24 ERA, but he has at least six strikeouts in each of his last four games and has pitching into the sixth in each of his last five outings.  He hasn’t been able to pick up a win in any of those starts, but he has avoided being shelled and been able to pick up enough K’s to end up with at least 33 fantasy points in five of his last eight starts.  Rodon is less ricky than Keuchel, but he does’ have the elite upside of Bumgarner or Carrasco.∗∗

Christian Friedrich-San Diego Padres (6,200): If you want to stack your lineup and go with a bargain-basement starting pitcher, Friedrich is as cheap as I would go tonight as he and the Padres take on the Diamondbacks in the desert.  Friedrich has allowed 14 earned runs in his last three starts which is why he’s a risky play tonight as he faces the Snakes.

However, he did hold the D-Backs scoreless in seven innings earlier this season allowing three hits and pitching up the win.  He has a much better record on the road (2-1, 1.88 ERA) than at home (2-2, 5.88 ERA), so he actually sets up well as he faces Zach Godley who was just recalled for Arizona. Hopefully returning to Chase Field to face the D-Backs brings back that good energy for Friedrich and he can be a gamble that pays off tonight.
