MLB All-Star Game 2016: 5 biggest NL snubs
2. Gregory Polanco
Like Marte, his teammate Gregory Polanco was absolutely snubbed. Even worse so than Marte, Polanco is not even listed as a final vote candidate. It is like no one watched him play baseball this year. He has had one of the better first halfs of any player in the league.
Polanco ranks second among NL outfielders in WAR. He ranks in the top ten of any National League player in WAR. He is on pace to have a season with over 20 home runs, 20 steals, 100 RBIs, and 100 runs scored. All while hitting .300 and ranking fifth in walk rate, and sixth in on base percentage.
Polanco is not quite Marte in the field yet, but he ranks seventh in defensive runs saved, and was second among outfielders in UZR, behind only Bryce Harper and Jayson Heyward. Polanco not only was snubbed from the roster, he should have been named a starter in the All-Star game.
Just because Marte and Polanco did not come into the season with the name value of McCutchen does not mean that either deserved to be snubbed. The hope now will be that Polanco can carry this first half into the rest of the summer with an added chip on his shoulder.
Neither has been able to make a name for themselves as an All-Star yet. However, with Polanco at age 24, and Marte at 27 something tells me that their 2016 seasons will put them on the map, and that we will see them representing the Pirates in the mid-summer classic much sooner than later.
