MLB All-Star Game 2016: National League roster
By David Rouben
The entire Chicago Cubs infield headlines the National League starters for the MLB All-Star Game.
The starting lineup for the National League in the MLB All-Star Game has been released and yes, you read that right. The infield will consist entirely of Chicago Cubs players. The last team to accomplish that feat: the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals. Dexter Fowler starts in center field as a way of rewarding them for their fantastic start to the season so far, even though the San Francisco Giants have stolen their perch at the top of the league standings.
Fans of other teams aren’t going to be pleased about this. (Is Ben Zobrist really that much better than Daniel Murphy?) But that’s what happens when you leave the starting rosters in the hands of the fans. Cubs nation was always going to represent their team hard, and so they have, with over half of the starting roster being taken up by their players.
Here’s the starting lineup in full:
As for the rest of the lineup, you can’t really debate it. Yoenis Cespedes, Bryce Harper and Buster Posey all deserve their starting spots. However, they haven’t announced the pitchers for either team, and the National League will have a Clayton Kershaw-sized hole to fill after he was placed on the 15-day DL. With the American League boasting power hitters such as Mike Trout, Manny Machado and David Ortiz, they will look to capitalize on that hole.
The National League boasts lots of talent, but the last three All-Star Games have gone the way of the American League. If they want to break that streak, they will have to rely heavily on the Chicago Cubs, who know a thing or two about going a long time without winning.
