MLB All-Star Game 2016: 5 most likely MVP candidates
2. David Ortiz
In his final MLB season, David Ortiz is having one of the best years of his legendary 20-year MLB career. Ortiz has been an absolute force in the middle of the Boston Red Sox’ lineup hitting an incredible .339/.433/.679 on the season.
Ortiz leads the big leagues in on-base percentage, slugging percentage and doubles (34). Also, his MLB-leading 184 wRC+ (FanGraphs) makes Ortiz theoretically the most productive offensive player in all of baseball.
Ortiz may not play the field, but he can still absolutely dominate with the bat. He is a true AL MVP candidate which is incredible for a 40-year-old DH in the last year of his career. Absolutely incredible.
If Ortiz does anything in the MLB All-Star Game, he is going to be a big-time threat for the MVP award. The sentimental choice typically wins out in this thing and Ortiz could easily be that choice this year, similar to when Mariano Rivera was named the ASG MVP in his retirement season of 2013.
If Big Papi goes yard, you can pretty much forget about anybody else winning the MVP. If he gets an RBI hit, he is certainly going to be a contender. As long as Ortiz does something in one of his at-bats, you can bet he will receive some MVP consideration.
He will have a ton of competition by all of the incredible young talent in the game, but Big Papi is undoubtedly an MLB All-Star Game MVP candidate.
