10 best MLB All-Star Game moments of all-time
7. Pedro Martinez Wins MVP
The 1999 All-Star Game will always be remembered for Ted Williams and the All-Century Team, but the magic of the pregame ceremony continued on during the beginning of the game.
Pedro Martinez started the game for the AL at his home stadium of Fenway Park and made a statement early.
Martinez struck out the first four batters he faced, finishing with five in his two innings of work. Striking out Barry Larkin, Larry Walker, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire to begin the game was a great way to follow-up all the pregame excitement.
The performance earned Martinez MVP honors as the AL went on to win 4-1.
The 1999 season was a memorable one for Martinez, as he went 23-4 with a 2.07 ERA in a Cy Young award-winning season. He also had 313 strikeouts that year, with his All-Star Game performance serving as a small sample of the entire season.
Martinez remained a member of the Red Sox until 2004 when the team broke its curse and won the World Series. He moved on after the season, but will always be remembered as a Red Sox great.
His great start to the 1999 All-Star Game will only add to his legend in Boston as time goes on.
