10 best MLB All-Star Game moments of all-time
4. The Tied Game
The 2002 All-Star Game is one of the most memorable since the turn of the century, but for all the wrong reasons.
The game was famously declared a tie by then-commissioner Bud Selig after both teams ran out of pitchers in the 11th inning.
The result was controversial and led to the MLB declaring future All-Star Games would decide home-field advantage in the World Series. The tie itself does not make this a great moment, but that it led to the game meaning something is what makes it so important.
All-Star Games were always held as fun, exhibition contests during the summer. But a tie in today’s era of professional sports in unacceptable to fans, and another tie after 2002 could have severely damaged the reputation of the event.
Adding the home-field advantage aspect turns the game into more than just an exhibition, and makes players on both sides treat it with great respect.
It also leads to the managers treating it like a playoff game, which only makes it more fun to watch for fans across the country and the world.
There are those who do not like the added incentive, but it is hard to argue against MLB having the best All-Star Game in professional sports.
