MLB Trade Deadline: 5 trades the Houston Astros should make
5. Trade for Carlos Beltran of the New York Yankees
The Astros swung a deal for a young Carlos Beltran way back in 2004. Beltran was an impact outfielder back then, and he ended up being a huge part of the Astros’ post season success that year.
While Beltran did not lead the Astros to the World Series, and they lost him that off season in free agency, he was an incredible addition to the team. Could the Astros look to a 39-year-old Beltran to improve their chances in 2016?
Beltran is no longer an elite defensive outfielder, but he is still a sweet-swinging player who can make a major offensive impact. Evan Gattis has been the Astros’ primary DH this season, but his .215/.281/.421 slash-line leaves plenty to be desired.
The switch-hitting Beltran is hitting .299/.338/.550 with 19 home runs for the New York Yankees this season, while being forced to play outfield, which is less than ideal at his advanced age. Beltran is set to become a free agent this off season, and if the 44-44 Yankees decide to sell, he is an obvious candidate.
Beltran could come in and be an impact player for the Astros at the DH spot, and should be available for a relatively slim price. There will be plenty of competitive teams interested in Beltran, but the Astros make among the most sense.
