3. Duncan’s second MVP in 2003
After Shaq and Kobe’s three-peat from 1999-2002 with the Lakers, this was finally Tim Duncan’s year. Not only did he win NBA MVP for the second consecutive season, he also finally got past those Los Angeles Lakers.
Duncan was once again regarded as the best player in NBA after back-to-back MVP awards. Duncan and the Spurs defeated the Lakers after losing to them in the playoffs the last two seasons. They would defeat the three-time defending champion Lakers in five games during the Western Conference semis.
Duncan also helped the Spurs improve their record from the 2001-2002 season, with the Spurs finishing with their first 60-win season in 27 seasons as a franchise.
Duncan put in another stellar season in 2002-2003 with averages of 23.3 points per game, 12.9 boards rebounds per game, 3.9 assists per game and 2.9 blocks per game. This year Duncan won out in the MVP voting over Kevin Garnett, with Garnett receiving 43 first place votes to Duncan’s 60.
