1. Duncan’s third title in seven seasons

With the San Antonio Spurs basically winning every other year, a title in 2005 felt like par for the course. Even though the Spurs never repeated, winning three titles in seven years is something that is not often done.

In the 2005 playoffs, Duncan and the Spurs once again rolled through the Western Conference. The Spurs wend 12-4 throughout the West, defeating the likes of the Denver Nuggets, Seattle SuperSonics and Phoenix Suns.

For Duncan, 2005 was his hardest test to date in the NBA Finals. He faced a great Detroit Pistons team who were the defending champions after upsetting the Lakers in 2004 Finals. But Duncan now had the help of young point guard, Tony Parker, and third year pro, Manu Ginobli, both of whom were coming into their own as players.

After a hard fought Finals, Duncan and the Spurs defeated the Pistons in seven games. This was Duncan’s first title without mentor and fellow Twin Tower member, David Robinson. Duncan averaged over 20 points and an outstanding 14 rebounds in seven games against the Pistons. Unsurprisingly, Duncan won his third Finals MVP in as many tries.
