MLB Trade Deadline: 5 trades Rockies should make
4. Jake McGee to Cardinals
This might be a bit hard for the Rockies to swallow. McGee was essentially the team’s big off-season move in 2016. He was in a bigger package, but McGee was one of the main reasons the team got rid of Corey Dickerson, who in all fairness is struggling.
Seeing Dickerson struggle, the Rockies can already call that trade a wash and see if they can find value for McGee.
McGee will have value, mainly because he has been a closer. He hit some bumps in the road in Colorado, but what pitcher doesn’t struggle with the altitude change?
Before going to Colorado, McGee had a career 2.77 ERA. He also recorded one walk per every 4.4 strikeouts. This year his ERA is 6.18 and he walks a batter per every 2.3 strikeouts. A change of scenery is absolutely what McGee needs.
The Cardinals are a savvy team. They could see McGee and what he offered before this season and find value. They are also a team desperate for a closer. They moved on from Trevor Rosenthal this season and are hoping a late inning guy can come in and give this team a jolt.
Therefore it seems like a good match. The Rockies should trust the Cardinals farm system, and should be able to grab a decent prospect for McGee.
