9. 2003 All-Star Game

The 2003 All-Star Game was a dramatic back and forth affair that would be close until the end as the National League would blow a lead in the late innings despite having one of the best relievers of his era on the mound to preserve the lead.

After four innings of strong pitching from the starters, the game would open up in the top of the fifth as the National League would explode for five runs. Todd Helton’s two-run homer sparking a big inning for the NL as they looked in control at the midway point with a 5-1 lead after 4.5 innings.

The NL would hold the lead until the bottom of the eighth inning when they put Eric Gagne on the mound, a closer who did not blow a save in the 2003 season for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Becoming one of the best closers of the 00’s in a short span where he was clutch night after night for the Dodgers.

The only game he wouldn’t register a save in would be the All-Star Game as a storybook two-out home run from Hank Blalock would end Gagne’s run as an un-hittable closer and give the AL the win. Keith Foulke would get the save with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth to finish off the comeback and shock the world, putting this game on the list as one of the best of all-time as one of the most dramatic late game finishes in the history of the annual event.
