3. 2006 All-Star Game
Another game with late-inning drama, the 2006 All-Star Game came eight years into the American League’s long streak of wins over the National League in the 2000s, again giving the game the intrigue of whether the streak would continue onward in another competitive game that continued to highlight the still new homefield advantage dynamic of the All-Star Game.
In a game that featured early runs, the National League would hold a 3-2 lead from the third inning all the way to the top of the ninth where Trevor Hoffman would come in trying to earn a save that would end the AL’s streak.
Hoffman looked lights out to start the ninth, grabbing two outs to start the inning, but would allow a rally for the ages. Paul Konerko giving the AL life with a single before a Troy Glaus ground rule double would set up Michael Young to be the hero with a two-run, two-out triple that would put the AL in front. Mariano Rivera coming in for the bottom of the ninth to earn the save and yet another win for the American League.
Young’s heroics to continue the streak with the AL down to their final out makes this game the best All-Star Game of the 2000s as one of the true classics of the event as after blowing a game with two outs you couldn’t help but wonder if the National League would ever win the game again.
