MLB Trade Deadline: 5 best spots for Carlos Gonzalez
5. Cleveland Indians
The Indians aren’t a club we associate with making splash moves or adding a lot of payroll at the deadline, but they have a real chance at a World Series title and Gonzalez would fill a need.
Cleveland has taken control of the AL Central race with a 52-36 record behind its terrific starting rotation. With a move to get another bat, the Indians can further establish themselves as AL favorites and solidify their lead over the three clubs chasing them in the Central.
The outfield looked like the clear weakness entering the season, and Michael Brantley’s extended injury rehab plus Marlon Byrd’s PED suspension didn’t help the situation. However, the unit has exceeded expectations, as Lonnie Chisenhall has hit well and Tyler Naquin is emerging as a surprise Rookie of the Year candidate.
Still, it’s fair to expect some regression from both, and there are outfield upgrades available on the market. Adding Gonzalez to play left field would allow Cleveland to move Jose Ramirez to third base more often in place of the light-hitting Juan Uribe and create a stronger lineup overall.
The Indians have some intriguing prospects like Bradley Zimmer and Clint Frazier to shop if they so choose. Colorado would likely have to eat some salary and perhaps throw in a reliever like Boone Logan, but would gladly make the deal if it returns an impact prospect.
Next: 4. Boston Red Sox
