ESPYS 2016: Bryant, Manning, Wambach win Icon Award (Video)

Abby Wambach, Kobe Bryant, and Peyton Manning all received the Icon Award during this year’s ESPYS award night.

Many great people and athletes were recognized during Wednesday night’s ESPYS. There were inspirational speeches as many awards were handed out. One of the best moments of the night came when the Icon Award was handed out to three great athletes who all retired this year: Abby Wambach, Kobe Bryant, and Peyton Manning.

All three athletes truly became icons and legends within their respective sports. It’s somewhat ironic that all three decided to retire and enter a new part of life all within the same year. Bryant, Manning, and Wambach have their records in the NBA, NFL, and soccer, respectively. Yet each is more than an athlete on the field or court, as they have truly become icons for their teammates, coaches, and the community.

There are too many memorable moments from the trio of legends to list here. However, their legacies will all be remembered as each go their separate ways in life away from the playing days. Their speeches during the acceptance speech allowed them to be thankful to those who mean the world to them, but also show once again why all three deserved the award together.

There are many individual awards at the ESPYS that are given to more than one person a year. Yet, it was appropriate that Bryant, Manning, and Wambach all earned the honor.

Bryany scored 81 points in a game, Manning threw seven touchdowns in a game, and Wambach has the most goals scored internationally across both men’s and women’s soccer. Each left a legacy in their sport and with their teams, and they will all be remembered for years to come.
