High Value SP

Marcus Stroman-Toronto Blue Jays(7,800): Toronto opens the ceremonial second half of the season on the Left Coast against the A’s.  Stroman will get the ball as he looks to continue his turnaround after a slow start. Stroman had two good starts to begin July going 1-0 with a 1.84 ERA after holding the Indians and Royals to three runs in 14.2 innings and striking out 12.  He should be in a place to succeed against Oakland tonight who he held scoreless for seven innings back in 2014 in his only previous career appearance. He won’t be matched up against Rich Hill (scratch), so he has a good shot at a W if he turns in another good outing. ∗∗∗

Anthony DeSclafani-Cincinnati Reds (7,200):   DeSclefani is a nice sleeper play in the low-7K range because he brings solid strikeout stuff to the table and is in a pretty good matchup tonight against the Brewers and Matt Garza.  DeSclafani is 3-0 on the year in his six starts and has at least five strikeouts in each of his last four outings.  He has totaled 29 K’s in his 36.1 innings and enters tonight with a 2.23 ERA.  DeSclafani has fanned a total of 25 batters in his last four starts spanning 27.2 innings.  He hasn’t faced the Brewers yet this year, but he is 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA against Milwaukee in his Career. His last home start was effective as he shut out the Padres for eight innings, so don’t stay away only for the park factor either.

Ervin Santana-Minnesota Twins (6,700): If you plan on rolling the dice with a cheap pitcher, the cheapest play I’d consider would be Ervin Santana whose name is sure to be circulated leading up tot he trade deadline. Santana is coming off his best start of the season in which he held the A’s to just two hits in a complete game shutout while walking none and striking out eight.

That outing didn’t come out of nowhere, though, since Santana has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his last four outings and lowered his ERA from 5.10 to 4.06 where it sits coming into tonight’s start. Before his great outing against the A’s, his best start of the season probably came when he faced the Indians who he’ll go up against tonight.  He held them to just on runoff five hits in six innings back on May 14 for his first win of the season.  The veteran will look to get the second half off to a strong start against Cleveland tonight and I see him as a boom-or-bust cheap play.
