FanDuel daily picks: Fantasy baseball lineup-July 16
High Value SP
Brandon McCarthy-Los Angeles Dodgers (8,000): McCarthy has only made two starts this season as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but he has looked pretty good in both outings. He made his season debut July 3 when he fanned eight Rockies in five shutout innings at Dodger Stadium. He followed that up with another five-inning outing in which he allowed three runs (two on a home run in the first inning) against the Padres. He won both outings, so he comes in tonight 2-0 with a 0.90 WHIP and 2.70 ERA.
Tonight, McCarthy faces his former team the D-Backs in Arizona. McCarthy played for Arizona in 2013 and 2014, but he never really pitched well at Chase Field. Tonight, he makes a boom-or-bust, high-risk play, but his ceiling is limited since he still doesn’t go deep into games with a limited pitch count. ∗∗
Jimmy Nelson-Milwaukee Brewers (6,800): Nelson is a nice value tonight as he and the Brewers take on the Reds. Nelson doesn’t get enough strikeouts to be a truly elite option, but he can turn in solid outings and should be in a place to pick up a win as he takes on John Lamb of the Reds who is 1-6 with a 5.40 ERA. Nelson beat the Reds earlier this year but does have a 5.11 ERA against them in two starts. He also has struggled on the road (1-4, 5.49 ERA), but he has been solid in his last few outings allowing three earned runs or less in four straight starts. Nelson is a solid cheap play, but he won’t get the strikeouts to have a huge night, so make sure the expensive bats he allows you to afford produce plenty of runs. ∗∗
Mike Foltynewicz-Atlanta Braves (6,600): Foltynewicz is another affordable option that makes sense tonight as he and the Braves host the Rockies. Since the game isn’t at Coors, the Rockies lineup isn’t a definitive “avoid,” and Foltynewicz is coming off one of his best starts of the season. He racked up 63 fantasy points against the White Sox in his last start before the break striking out ten and walking none while allowing five hits in seven innings. Before that outing, Foltynewicz had allowed eight runs in 8.2 innings in his previous two starts, so he isn’t always that locked in.
However, there is definitely a higher ceiling for Foltynewicz than Nelson, and his recent outings show he’s trending the right way. He looks to improve to 4-3 with a win tonight over the Rockies, and I think he’s the best play under 8K. ∗∗∗
