First Baseman

High-Salary Option: Paul Goldschmidt-Arizona Diamondbacks (4,600): Goldy is the most expensive 1B for good reasons tonight as he and the D-Backs host their former teammate Brandon McCarthy and the Dodgers.  Goldschmidt has multiple hits in four of his last five games and has at least 12 fantasy points in eight of his last ten.  He started the second half in style with 37.9 fantasy points last night including a homer, three RBI, and even a stolen base. The Dodgers won last night’s game 13-7 at Chase Field, and there should be plenty of runs scored in the desert again tonight. If you can squeeze his salary under your cap, Goldschmidt makes a ton of sense. ∗∗∗∗

High-Salary Option: Mike Napoli-Cleveland Indians (4,200): Napoli has started July hot going 13-41 (.317) so far this month with three homers already.  He now has 19 long-balls this season after going yard last night and raised his OPS to .811. Napoli went 3-4 last nigh with three runs scored and he’ll look to continue his production tonight against Tyler Duffey and the Twins. ∗∗∗

Mid-Range  Option: Joe Mauer-Minnesota Twins (3,200): Mauer went 1-4 with a run scored last night against the Indians and has hit safely in six of his last seven games dating back to before the All Star break.  Mauer has started the month 12-37 (.324) and is 6-20 (.300) with a homer and three RBI in his career against tonight’s starter Trevor Bauer. Mauer’s production has been below his career averages the year, but he’s looking like he may be turning it around lately.∗∗

Mid-range Option: Jose Abreu-Chicago White Sox (3,000): Abreu and the White Sox could get nothing going last night in their 7-0 defeat against the Angels.  Tonight, they’ll look to turn that around against Matt Shoemaker.  Abreu is 2-9 in his career against Shoemaker with a homer, and he started July strong before the break.  He enters tonight 13-40 (.325) this month although he is still searching for his first homer since June 23.∗∗∗

Mid-range Option: Kennys Vargas-Minnesota Twins (3,000): Vargas last his five-game hitting streak last night going 0-3 against the Indians to start the second half.  He has a good chance to bounce back tonight, though, against Trevor Bauer.  In his career, Vargas is 5-10 against Bauer with a homer and four RBI. He has started July 8-20 since being called up from Triple-A and has already hit three long balls. He’s a bit of a flier, but at 3K he has a ton of upside to like against Cleveland tonight.∗∗

High-Value Option: Tommy Joseph-Philadelphia Phillis (2,400): Joseph has at least six fantasy points in six of his last seven games including four games with over 15 fantasy points. He went 1-4 last night while scoring a run, and he’ll look to continue his hot start to the month tonight against the Mets.  Joseph is 11-27 in July (.407) with three homers and six RBI.  He and the Phils don’t face one of the Mets’ better starting pitchers tonight as they face Logan Verrett who will try to step in for David Wright.  The Phillies are a good source of cheap potential tonight in a game at home where they should be able to score some runs. ∗∗
