Second Baseman

High-Salary Option: Ian Kinsler-Detroit Tigers (3,500): Most of the big name 2B are in action this afternoon, but Kinsler is a nice play tonight after opening the second half strong with a 2-4 night last night including a leadoff homer to set the tone early in Detroit’s 4-2 win.  Kinsler now has 17 homers on the year and is hitting .292 with a .847 OPS.  He will face Danny Duffy tonight which hasn’t been a good matchup for him in the past.  In his career, Kinsler is just 3-20 (.150) against Duffy although one of those hits was a home run.  All season, though, Kinsler has feasted on left-handed pitching going 33-97 (.340) with a very healthy .938 OPS. While BvP says to stay away, the other stats and scarcity of options at the position make Kinsler an option to consider as he leads Detroit against the Royals again tonight.∗∗

High-Salary Option: D.J. LeMahieu-Colorado Rockies (3,500): LeMahieu went 1-5 with a triple, run scored, and RBI last night in Atlanta as the Rockies rolled 11-2 over the Braves.  He raised his average on the season to a healthy .332.  Granted, most of that is a result of his .380 mark at Coors Field, but even away from home he can be a solid option.  He and the Rockies will face Mike Foltynewicz tonight who I like as a sleeper SP, and LeMahieu likes facing having gone 4-4 against him in their past meetings  with a pair of RBI.

Mid-Range Option: Brian Dozier-Minnesota Twins (3,300): Dozier went yard last night in the Twins loss giving him a home run in each of his last two games.  He started the season extremely slow but has turned things around lately.  He is still hitting just .247 on the season, but his recent success makes him a flier for tonight against Trevor Bauer.

High Value Option: Chase Utley-Los Angeles Dodgers (2,700): Utley got the night off last night against southpaw Patrick Corbin although he did enter the game as a pinch-hitter (going 0-1).  He started July 9-31 (.290) with a pair of doubles and should be back in the starting lineup for the Dodgers tonight as they face right-hander Archie Bradley who Utley is 2-5 against with three RBI. Utley’s splits show a definite advantage to hitting on the road (.291, 792 OPS) and against righties, so give him a look if you have to spend under 3K tonight. ∗∗

Bonus Bargain Basement Option: Jose Pereza-Cincinnati Reds (2,000): Pereza could get the start tonight if Brandon Phillips is forced to sit with his right calf strain.  Phillips was already playing through a fractured hand when he was forced to leave the game early last night.  Pereza has shown he has some nice speed in his 26 games in the Majors going 9/9 in stolen base attempts.  He doesn’t have a ton of power, but he could be a rare 2K-starter if he gets the call in place of  Phillips tonight.
