Mortal Kombat XL kicks off the historic Evo 2016 Sunday matches, even if 8 AM PDT was too early for some.

Evo 2016 took a giant leap for the fighting game community by booking their first Sunday Finals day at the 12,000-seating Mandalay Bay Events Center. Despite the seemingly exploding interest in competitive fighting game tournaments, the 8 AM PDT start time for Mortal Kombat XL meant a very slow, empty start to Sunday action.

It’s a long day of Evo 2016 action, and as the Mortal Kombat XL competition started to heat up, so too did the growing in-stadium audience. They were in for a show during the Grand Finals, as Dominique “SonicFox” McLean brought two 3-0 matches to make it there. He faced off against Sayed hashim “Tekken Master” Ahmed, who was up two games and one round in Losers Finals to Brad “Scar” Vaughn before he climbed back to 2-2 and the final round. Tekken Master would move on, with Scar settling for 3rd place.

SonicFox, who had been running a one-man show, looked lost in the first set, as Tekken Master went 3-1 to reset the brackets. It was Tekken’s Kotal Kahn that really turned fates around for him, but it was not enough in the second set. SonicFox brought out Alien in the final game to become your Mortal Kombat XL Evo 2016 champion, taking down Tekken Master 3-2.

Alexandre “Hayatei” Dub-bilod had a strong chance to bring Canada its second Evo 2016 Grand Finals winner for Mortal Kombat XL, but was unfortunately outmatched in both his Sunday matches, taking two losses in a row to finish 5th. Same goes for Ryan “WoundCowboy” Gonzalez, who was thwarted by Tekken Master and Scar to finish in 5th.

More than 104,500 concurrent viewers were watching Mortal Kombat XL from home on Twitch on the main (only) channel this morning; a remarkable start to a long day of Evo 2016 Finals play. Lots of Finals players were utilizing excellent counter-picks and the stream enjoyed a great variation in roster representation. Surprisingly, Mileena was nowhere to be found, and the Alien was brought out for just two games.
