8. Solomon Hill – Pelicans (4 years, $52 million)

Through his first three years in the NBA after being taken at No. 23 in the 2013 NBA Draft, Solomon Hill played 169 regular season games for the Indiana Pacers. He averaged 20.6 minutes per game over those contests and averaged a meager six points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per outing while shooting only 40.9 percent from the field and 32.5 percent from three. Somehow that led the New Orleans Pelicans to give the 25-year-old a four-year, $52 million contract.

If you’re thinking that those career numbers might be misleading as he could’ve broke out last season, his numbers last year were even worse than his sophomore campaign save for his efficiency shooting the ball. Otherwise, Hill is a player that’s made no real noticeable improvements since arriving in the NBA, that can’t particularly shoot, and that isn’t a fantastic defender. As such, he should be a guy that’s just trying to stick somewhere in the league, not a player that a team seemingly on the verge of competing with the right personnel moves being made should be looking to pay $13 million per year.

There are bad contracts in free agency and then there are those that are just wholly baffling in every regard. Without question, Hill’s contract with New Orleans falls into the latter category.
