Thomas Pieters breaks and throws 5-iron into the Gorse at The Open (Video)
Thomas Pieters, like many of the players at The Open Championship, isn’t a big fan of the 11th hole and that was made clear on Sunday when he broke his 5-iron over his knee.
Simply put, golf is hard.
Just ask Thomas Pieters.
On the par-4, 11th hole, better known as one of the hardest holes at Royal Troon Golf Club for The Open Championship, Pieters had a rough go-around.
It took him seven shots to reach the green.
We’ve all been there, Thomas.
Pieters took a 9 on the hole (or +5 if you’re keeping score at home) and followed up a promising front nine with a bogey on the 10th hole and then his adventures at the 11th hole.
In terms of angry outbursts on the course this weekend, Pieters probably overtook Rory McIIroy and his club throw that broke his 3-wood from Saturday’s action.
Not only did Pieters snap his 5-iron in half, he took his time throwing the broken club into the Gorse all at once. He threw it in one piece at a time and completely disregarded the fairly solid shot he hit from where he was.
The call after Pieters’ broken club incident was the call and the amount of shade that was thrown from NBC’s commentary team.
“You know, you learn one thing about playing in The Open. If you can’t break par, you might as well break something.”
NBC’s Dan Hicks threw the ultimate salt in the wound for Pieters by adding, “That was the best shot he hit on the hole!”
That’s cold, Dan.
