Creating a Team USA Olympics football roster using NFL athletes
9. Linebackers
To finish off the starting defensive front seven, let’s take a look at a pair of more traditional linebackers who fit in well with this squad.
Luke Kuechly, Carolina Panthers
Another relatively easy pick here as Luke Kuechly undoubtedly needs to be on this team. Kuechly is probably the best inside linebacker in the entire NFL. He is much faster and more athletic than most players at his position and shows ridiculous play-making ability on top of that.
Kuechly is an elite pass defender for the linebacker position, showing the ability to defend the entire middle of the field by himself. He also always puts himself in a prime position to make a play on the ball, and has big-time ball skills, frequently making interceptions.
Plus, when Kuechly gets the ball in his hands, he knows how to make the most out of the opportunity.
An incredible pass defender with strong pass rush and run defense skills, Kuechly is a must-have on Team USA.
Anthony Barr, Minnesota Vikings
Taking Anthony Barr was a much less obvious selection. The linebacker next to Kuechly primarily came down to Barr and NaVorro Bowman of the San Francisco 49ers. Bowman’s veteran leadership and ability against the run would have certainly made sense, but I decided to go with the more talented and versatile Barr.
Barr is an elite-level athlete at the linebacker position. He is fantastic in pass coverage and always seems to create pressure on the quarterback when given the opportunity to blitz. He is also an impact player against the run, showing consistent quickness to knife into the backfield to make plays.
Barr’s versatility is also huge here. He plays 4-3 outside linebacker for the Vikings, and could easily do so for Team USA. However, Barr’s skill-set makes him a great option at 3-4 inside linebacker, making him a fantastic fit for the team.
