MLB Trade Deadline: 5 best spots for Andrew Cashner
3. Miami Marlins
The Miami Marlins have been a bit of a surprise this season. They have exceeded expectations, entering July 19 as the second wild card team in the National League. That said, if they want to make the playoffs, they need to make some moves in order to hold off the surging Pittsburgh Pirates and the relentless St. Louis Cardinals. Specifically, they need to upgrade their rotation and they have expressed interest in Andrew Cashner.
Jose Fernandez has been a bonafide ace for the Marlins. Adam Conley has been a huge surprise. However, their rotation has been unimpressive other than those two starting pitchers. None of their other three starters have an ERA+ of around 100. Andrew Cashner would be a nice addition to their rotation.
At worst, Cashner would be a noticeable upgrade over Justin Nicolino. Optimistically, perhaps Cashner finds himself in Miami and starts to resemble what he once was — an excellent pitcher who quietly gets the job done. The Marlins are going to need to hold off the New York Mets as well. Cashner, if he can rebound, could certainly do that. Even in a worst case scenario, he’s unquestionably an upgrade to a rotation that desperately needs help.
Andrew Cashner wouldn’t require much to trade for at this point, making him an even better fit for the Marlins.
