1.Fernando Abad to Cubs

While Abad is not the most popular name in the organization, he may be able to bring in the best return. Every team needs left handed relief pitching. It is almost a yearly tradition that you see left handers bringing back way more than anticipated in the closing minutes of the trade deadline.

Every team is going to go big for Andrew Miller, but not every team is going to get Andrew Miller. The Yankees may not even move him if the price is not right. That leaves a high demand for the next best thing for a flurry of teams. The Rangers, Cardinals, Indians and Cubs all come to mind when it comes to bidding for relief pitching.

While Miller is the big prize, Abad can be looked at as a possible next best option. He is coming in with a 2.73 ERA this season, and is striking out about one batter per inning. Abad is under team control through next season, but would be a free agent at that point. If a team is to throw any significant offer at the Twins for Abad, they would almost have to take it.

The smart thing for the Twins to do would be wait this out and find the team who is desperate and cannot find a deal or misses out on Miller. It seems unlikely the Cubs will land Miller, but they have a farm system capable of doing so. They can lower the bar just a bit add Abad, and be able to beat out any other teams offer for him. It would make a lot of sense for the Cubs to add a reliever like Abad.
