Ray Rice to donate entire check if given a second chance
By Greg Patuto
Former Ravens running back Ray Rice says he would donate his entire pay check if he was given a second chance by an NFL team.
Ray Rice burst onto the scene in his second season out of Rutgers and showed he could succeed in the NFL. From 2009-2012, he rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of those four seasons and scored 33 touchdowns.
He saw his luck change in 2013 not only on the field, where he ran for 660 yards and only 4 touchdowns, but off the field as well. Rice was released by the Ravens after a video came out of him punching his then fiancée, now wife, Janay Palmer in a casino elevator in Atlantic City. According to NFL.com, Rice told USA TODAY that he would donate his entire check if a team was to give him another shot in the league.
“Me donating my salary is something that’ll be from the heart for me,” Rice said. “I only want to play football so I can end it the right way for my kids and for the people that really believed in me. But I know there’s a lot of people affected by domestic violence, and every dollar helps. It’s raising awareness.”
Rice has not drawn any interest from teams this summer, but that has not stopped him from coming back to the sport he loves. He was been working out in Stamford, Connecticut, near his home and spending time with his family. Rice has a 4-year old daughter, and his second child is due in September.
Rice has done all he can to try to right his wrongs and prove he has changed. He has visited many colleges to speak on his mistake.
“I think the biggest donation you can give to domestic violence is your time,” Rice explained. “I’m not just going to be giving it because I have money. I’m going to be giving it because I did the background and research and spent a lot of time with people that understand the cause.”
Rice is currently a free agent and can be signed by any team.
