High Value SP

Gerrit Cole-Pittsburgh Pirates (8,500): Like Yu Darvish, Cole has a reduced price and some extra risk as a result of his recent return from injury.  He only lasted four innings in his return against the Nationals allowing seven hits and four earned runs while dropping to 5-5 on the season. Cole was his usual ace-quality self before his injury, and he’ll look to return to form in a great matchup tonight.

Cole takes the mound in Pittsburgh tonight against the Phillies. Philadelphia has scored the second-fewest runs in the Majors this season and has the third-lowest batting average.  Although Cole hasn’t faced them this year, he’s 3-1 against them in his career with 1 2.31 ERA and 23 K’s in 23.1 innings pitched.  While he is not without risk in just his second start back, he is a great buy at this price, and I think he’ll be a widely owned option tonight.

Marco Estrada-Toronto Blue Jays (8,400): Estrada will be making his return tonight after a quick trip to the DL spanning the All Star break with a minor back injury.  Estrada will look to pick up where he left off since he was finding his groove before the layoff.

Estrada has at least seven strikeouts in each of his last three starts and allowed exactly three runs in each of those starts.  He comes into tonight with a solid 2.93 ERA despite giving up a home run in each of his last six starts.  The reason he makes sense at this price for fantasy is that he has a nice strikeout rate and should be able to get a win with a solid outing at home tonight as he takes on Seattle.

Eduardo Rodriguez-Boston Red Sox (6,400): Rodriguez returned from Triple-A with a solid start to begin the second half, and he’s the player I’d target if you’re going cheap on pitching tonight.  Rodriguez picked up his second win of the season allowing just one run on four hits in seven innings against the Yankees on Saturday, and he’ll look to turn in another good performance tonight at Fenway against the Twins.  Boston’s bats have been bashing, so a win is a good possibility as long as he avoids getting shelled.  Rodriguez only struck out one batter in his last start, so he is a boom-or-bust play tonight with a good shot at a win.
