MLB Trade Deadline: 5 trades Blue Jays should make
1. Tyson Ross
The Padres almost certainly want to move on from Tyson Ross. He is coming into a season with only one year of team control left. To hold onto him into this off-season would mean that if they want to move him next season, teams will want to know whether they can extend him or not before committing a big package for him.
It dwindles the list of teams interested down, and it gives the Padres a timer to either make the deal or watch him leave via free agency next year. Essentially, they lose any leverage that they once had.
Unfortunately, Ross puts them in a predicament where they hardly have leverage to begin with. To start, this season Ross made one start and was immediately put on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. He was expected to begin a rehab assignment right before the All-Star break when a freak injury delayed his comeback by a few weeks. The Padres are now scrambling to get him on the mound by August 1st to make a deal for him.
The Blue Jays could see this situation and realize they are the perfect buyers. They do not need to rush Ross back, and may even be more comfortable easing him back. It would mean that he is rehabbing to the status of Estrada and Sanchez. If either are to blow up, it is time to throw Ross in the mix. If both are going to break barriers and pitch consistent, let Ross slowly rehab.
When looking into the off-season RA Dickey is a free agent. The team can look to extend Dickey at age 41, or can look at Ross at age 29 with only one year on his deal and decide which one is the better bet moving forward (hint, it would be Ross barring injury).
It is a move that fits the Jays roster this season, and can only help the Jays roster moving forward. If they feel the slightest bit comfortable signing him this off-season they should make the call. They can add the best pitcher on the market, and potentially add him to the rotation moving forward at a price that is cheaper than you would think. Why would that not consider it?
