MLB Trade Deadline: 5 moves Orioles should make
2. Trade for Jeremy Hellickson
The Philadelphia Phillies have Jeremy Hellickson, who will be a free agent after this season. Like Boone Logan, Baltimore is quite familiar with Hellickson, who spent the first five seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Rays. Hellickson struggled in his past three seasons, but he has had a bit of a bounce back year ahead of free agency. He has a very respectable 3.84 ERA, 4.22 FIP, and a 107 ERA+.
Hellickson has averaged just under six innings a start this season with 119 2/3 innings pitched in 20 games as of July 21. The Orioles don’t need outstanding starters with their bullpen. All they need is to have guys who can give them five to six innings consistently so that they can hand it over to their stellar bullpen.
He doesn’t have the best track record in the American League East, but he hasn’t that far removed from his impressive 2012 season. His FIP is the lowest that it has been since 2014. Since leaving Tampa Bay, Hellickson has become a more efficient pitcher in terms of striking guys out. His 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings is the second highest of his career, trailing only his rookie season.
Hellickson might cost a bit, but he’s worth the price for the Orioles.
