The rumors were swirling that the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride was going to close, based on whispers about secretive midnight Imagineering meetings at the ride’s location. Imagineers are the people who help create Disney magic, and when they start meeting quietly in the parks there is a good chance that something is coming.

On Saturday, at the end of the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con, the rumors were confirmed: Guardians of the Galaxy is going to take over the Tower of Terror to become Guardians of the Galaxy—Mission: Breakout. The Tower of Terror will close in early 2017 and will reopen later in 2017 with a new look, and a new concept.

This move makes sense for a number of reasons. Disney doesn’t own the rights to The Twilight Zone, so instead of continuing to pay royalty fees to CBS, they’re removing it entirely and replacing it with their own intellectual property. And instead of building a completely new ride, they’re just remodeling an existing ride, which is yet another cost-cutting measure. Perhaps more telling is the location of the ride, which is nestled on the outskirts of Hollywood Land in Disney California Adventure, which includes a fairly large parcel of unused space backstage. This will allow for future expansion and the creation of Marvel Land.

However, as soon as the news broke, the Disneyland Annual Passport Twitter account released the news to Annual Passholders, and the reception was probably not what Disney executives expected.

Will Disney fans eventually grow to accept the news, or is this bad timing for the House of Mouse? That remains to be seen.
