Loot Crate July 2016 unboxing and review: Futuristic

facebooktwitterreddit

Welcome to … the World of Tomorrow!

It’s time to get futuristic up in here. And while that word doesn’t continue to hold its meaning as time marches on — Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland would be sadly nodding its head in agreement right now if it had one — we humans seem to be continually fascinated with what’s coming down the road.

Loot Crate is taking advantage of that tendency with its July 2016 shipment, which combines several popular and otherwise unrelated IPs under the Futuristic banner? Does it work? That’s what we’re all here to find out.

Not every Loot Crate package can be repurposed, but the July box can, as it folds into a hangar and diorama, perfect for our first item:

Exclusive “Planet Express” Ship Model (from QMX)

QMX is a pretty consistent loot crate partner, and instead of a Q-Fig this month, we get a cool model of the delivery ship from Futurama. It comes with a display base so you can set it up and make it appear to be blasting off, perhaps right into the sign like the opening of every episode of the classic animated series.

Exclusive 3″ Mega Man Red Variant Figure (from Kidrobot)

This one is a tad confusing because the packaging shows the entire line of Mega Man figures, making it appear you could get any of them in normal blind boxed fashion. Rest assured, it’s the red variant inside.

Exclusive Rick and Morty Tee (from Loot Crate Labs)

This feels like the most hit or miss item in the July 2016 crate. Rick and Morty has certainly exploded in popularity over the last six months or so, and there’s a good question you’ll get some props from the show’s fans while wearing this — along with plenty of confused expressions from people who don’t watch it. Still, it’s an eye-catching design, following up on last month’s excellent RoboCop tee.

Exclusive Star Trek Dedication Plaque Replica Decal (from BD&A)

There’s always one item in any Loot Crate that feels like a bit of a throw-in, and this decal is it for this month. Perfect for Trekkies or Trekkers (we make no judgments here), but not so hot for anyone else. Fortunately, Star Trek fandom is widespread enough that you should be able to find a taker for this — and the Star Trek Online loot that comes with the pin code — even if you don’t want to keep it.

Exclusive 4001 A.D. #1 (by Valiant Comics)

You don’t find a comic in your shipment all that often, but this one is welcome here and fits the theme. It’s a fun jumping in point if you haven’t checked out what Valiant is up to, though since it’s an exclusive variant cover, you might want to keep it bagged up and just buy a regular copy of the issue to read.

Value Proposition

We haven’t had an issue with not getting our money’s worth since we began reviewing Loot Crate shipments, and there’s nothing to worry about for this box either. The shirt, comic, model, and Mega Man figure easily cover your purchase price, even with shipping tacked on.

Loot Crate has been able to get away with some fairly loose themes because it delivers in this area, so even if you’re not feeling “Futuristic” all that much, you shouldn’t be disappointed with the overall assortment for July.

Disclosure: FanSided was provided with a free July 2016 Loot Crate box for the purposes of this review.
