8,000-7,500

Martin Laird (8,000): Laird has three top-25’s in his last four starts including a co-runner up finish two weeks ago at the RBC Canadian Open.  He didn’t play last week at the PGA Championship, but he did finish t15 last season at the Travelers after a 70-67-67-67. He’s a solid option from 8K if he can contend for a second tournament in a row.

Justin Thomas (7,800): Thomas has the length to contend any time his putter doesn’t hold him back.  He was in the thick of things at The Open Championship early in the week but faded to a t53 followed by a t66 last week at the PGA Championship.  Last year he missed the cut at this event, but he’s still a breakthrough waiting to happen. He posed a t30 three years ago at the Travelers Championship which has his first tournament as a professional.

Tyrrell Hatton (7,700): Hatton has been a fixture in my lineups for The European Tour and has had some success in Majors as well as a nice value play. The 24-year-old Enslighman secured an invite to his first regular PGA Tour event with a strong finish at Baltusrol where he managed a solid t10. It was his third top-ten in July after a solo-second at the Scottish Open and a t5 at The Open Championship. Hatton had five straight top-20 finishes on the European Tour earlier this spring and is one of the emerging talents from Europe even though he hasn’t had a breakthrough win yet.

Brian Harman (7,700): Harman led last year’s Travelers after three rounds before missing the playoff by one stroke.  He finished third behind Watson and Casey, and he has shown he is very comfortable at TPC River Highlands where he has made the cut in all five appearances.  He also comes in with solid form after shooting a Final Round 63 at Glen Abbey to finish t23 which has his third top-25 in his last five starts all of which have been made cuts.

Daniel Summerhays (7,600): Summerhays is coming off an exceptional solo-third at the PGA Championship where he fired a closing 66. The week before, Summerhays missed the cut at the Canadian Open, but he did flash good form throughout the spring and summer with top-25’s at the Valero Texas Open (t13), the Wells Fargo Championship (t14), THE PLAYERS (t23), the U.S. Open (t8), and the Quicken Loans National (t21). I seem the MC at Glen Abbey as an outlier and think he’s a great play at this price this week although he has missed the cut in three of his four trips to the Travelers in his career with a 74th-place finish his other trip.  I’ll take his current form over his course history, though, especially at just over 7.5K.

Keegan Bradley (7,600): Bradley is playing a “home game” in New England and has made five straight cuts at The Travelers.  He emerged from a nondescript season with a t18 at The Open Championship and then finishing t42 with an uneven 73-68-71-66 at Baltusrol. He has just one top-25 in those five made cuts, but he’s a solid pick to play the weekend if you want a relatively “safe” play.
