Winner: Texas Rangers

The AL West was taken over by the Texas Rangers throughout the first half of the season. However, after scuffling in July, their lead shrunk with the Houston Astros clawing back. It became apparent that the Rangers needed to make a move to improve somewhere, most notably starting pitching.

A starter was not acquired, though. What they did reel in was catcher Jonathan Lucroy and reliever Jeremy Jeffress from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Given how weak the Rangers starting staff is, adding bullpen pieces to somewhat balance everything out makes sense. Jeffress could slot in as a set-up man to bridge the gap to closer Sam Dyson.

The real story here is Lucroy. He boosts their weak catching spot that was held by Robinson Chirinos and others. Lucroy will be the starter, and adds an impact bat to an already stout lineup.

Then they acquired Carlos Beltran from the New York Yankees. He could be their designated hitter and another batter that must be feared by opposing pitching staffs. It makes their lineup deep from top to bottom.

These pieces have potentially put the Rangers over the top, especially with the Astros doing nothing. It’s a big win.
