MLB Trade Deadline: 5 worst moves
By Matt Couden
1. Giants get Matt Moore, trade Matt Duffy
While the San Francisco Giants are leading the NL West at 61-44, they certainly gave up a lot of talent and some emotional ties in order to try to improve their pitching rotation. Among the players dealt was a fan favorite, third baseman Matt Duffy, who was returning from an ACL injury that had him on the disabled list.
While sending away Duffy to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Giants added pitcher Matt Moore to their rotation. This addition is highly questionable, as Moore used to be one of the top pitchers in the game, but more recently has been ineffective. Moore had Tommy John surgery back in 2013 and has started just 35 games since then, averaging a 4.43 ERA during that time.
Team chemistry and fan support is a major aspect for squads as they look to improve their positions for the postseason. The Giants got rid of a top notch personality from their clubhouse, which may have left a number of fans sour over the move. Time will tell if Matt Moore is able to provide some pitching support as the team makes a push toward the World Series, but his recent inconsistencies along with the departure of Duffy could hurt more than help.
